One consistent theme we have seen in our study of the Gospel of Mark is resting in Jesus. Our loving Savior wants us to rest in Him, that is, to have faith that He will provide everything we need for any situation we face. Resting in Jesus keeps us from operating out of fear and anxiety and places our trust in Him, not our circumstances.
Resting in Jesus is not easy, however. We live in a fast-paced “go-go-go” society that prioritizes doing over resting and being in control over not being in control. Because of this, it can become easy to try and operate out of our own strength. This can then lead to feelings of anxiousness, exhaustion and restlessness when we feel like things are out of our control or that we are not measuring up.
The Apostle Paul reminds us of something very important in Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV):
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which passes all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Paul’s words are timeless. Written centuries ago, they still speak to any situation you and I face today. What are you anxious about today? What may be causing you stress or restlessness?
Today, we can rest in the sovereignty and power of Jesus knowing that He has us, (and our situations) in the palm of His hands. There is no situation you could ever face that is too strong for Jesus.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the rest you provide. Today, I cast my cares onto you. I seek your strength and not my own. I rest in you. Amen.
